  7 Sep 2023 - 11 Sep 2023
Last portion of the trip was two day trail Fimmvörþuháls heading between two glaciers. Initial ascent was quite easy, moving from Volcano Huts valley to the glacier field on the top. On open fields it started raining again and it kept on lava fields, ice and snow fields, and everywhere else. Fortunately near highest point of the trail there was a chalet. The shelter, some dry place without wind, and a bit of beer helped a lot. The other day was descent to Skogar winding around a river with many waterfalls. It kept raining all day, but vision of close end moved us through all day with a good mood. After tasting great fish&chips, enjoying thermal swimming pool at Hvolsvöllur, and day in Reykjavik we successfully finished this trip.

The route continues over flat black volcanic fields. The landscape is rather dull and monotonous, with nice hills on the horizon. Weather follows Icelandic standard, it is constantly drizzling with occassional rains and few seconds long sun shows. We decided to press on a bit and joined two segments of the route, finishing Laugavegur in Volcano Huts site.

  3 Sep 2023 -
Initial part of the Laugavegur trail, from Landmannalaugar over Höskuldsskáli and Álftavatn to Hvanngil chalet. We'd been warned about blizzard, which actually came. In strong winds and frequent rains we made it to the highest point of the trail, where we had spent night in a tent. The morning greeted us with couple inches of snow. The first two days had been through so-called "rainbow mountains" with beautiful views, strong winds, weather changing every few seconds. After we landed in Hvanngil chalet, we were pretty happy to accept the shelter.

Trip to Iceland to travel famous Laugavegur trail. We arrived to Keflavik airport, about 50 kilometers from the country capital, Reykjavik. As we arrived after midnight and failed to reach the camp we have booked, we had to spend the night on wastes close to the airport fence. Following day we moved to the capital, looked a bit around and in the next morning moved to the start of the trail, Landmanalaugar site.

First week of July we hiked over less famous portion of Mala Fatra mountains in Slovakia with Alice and her sister's dog Bella. It was a bit risky, but turned out to be great adventure and nice time. Five days of hike over summits and valleys, grassy meadows, deep forests and occassional rocks, sleeping in tent, drinking from quells and cooking on gas stove. Last few days we spent in camp Slunecne skaly (Sunny rocks) and tried local rocks with some climbing. Slovakia at its best.

  27 Aug 2022 - 31 Aug 2022
Travel over mountain ridge close to Zell am See with our friends. We spent two days camping on the ridge, we saw much cattle, horses and beautiful views.
  2 Jul 2022 - 9 Jul 2022
Week in Austria, especially Lechtaller Alp mountains. The Eagle Way is long distance trail. We picked last couple sections which were marked as difficult and rightly so. In the hindsight it was wonderful move, with many steep saddles, large valleys and varying beautiful landscape.

Nice weekend trip without kids, so we were able to make much greater distance. Highest point was Kralicky Sneznik, second biggest peak in Moravia region. We were lucky for the weather was very nice and we had a lot of fun.

  11 Aug 2020 - 14 Aug 2020
After traverse over Rychlebske mountains we needed to recover and enjoy some silent days without much effort. So we stayed four days on mountain chalet called Paprsek (Lightbeam), doing small trips around looking for mushrooms, observation towers nearby or swimming pool in one nearby village.

Since COVID-19 is everywhere, we tried to avoid people as much as possible. There are a mountains following Polish-Czech border called Rychlebske hory. As there are no chalets and the ridge is couple days walk, only people willing to drag your baggage and tent go there, promising much less people than in other areas. It turned out to be good choice and a lot of fun.

Two families on nice trip over Raxalpe plateau. Overall 20 kilometers in two days with sleeping on mountain chalet called Habsburghaus.

  9 Oct 2019 - 13 Oct 2019
Four days next to Austria-Italy border in area called Carinthia (or Kärnten in german). It is wonderful place of large lakes hidden between mountains. We originally planned bike trip, but ended doing local Via Feratas. Combined with nice fall weather and very little people around it was great vacation.
  15 Aug 2019 - 18 Aug 2019
Moving forward to town of Oravice in area northern from Western Tatras. It sports thermal spas, too. It also offered nice area for mountain hikes, with views to rocky faces and a lot of nature wonders.

First part of week-long holiday with kids in Slovakia. Starting with mountain trips at Mala Fatra mountains and two nights at a chalet. Next stop was in thermal spa town Besenova, sleeping in koliba (Slovakia traditional pub/accomodation) and some visits to baths. Despite (or because of) pretty cold temperatures and rainy days, it was memorable experience.

With bunch of colleagues we went to Western Tatras, hiked nice round-trip over Baranec, Placlive, and Ostry Rohac back to campsite in Rackova valley. We were lucky with beautiful weather and deeply enjoyed this nice part of Slovakia.

  27 Sep 2018 - 1 Oct 2018
Second part of our Madeira trek led us to famous are of 25 fontes (springs). With almost unbeaten track down the valley it had quite difficult start followed by slow ascent to Rabaçal. Following levada do Paul showed dry face of the island. Around camping site Estanquinhos we switched again the landscape to wet forests of north part of Madeira, with some nice tunnels along levada do Norte.

We planned a trip to Slovakia mountains, but as there was looming bad weather, the final decision was to climb up Lysa hora (Bald mountain) in Beskydy range. First stop was in climbing centre near parking lot. It was slippery, but nicely empty area spanning between trees and offering many exercises. The mountain itself is not very big, so we made it up in around two hours and slept in one of the chalets at the top. Second day it was pretty rainy, but it just made us to get back faster.
  3 Jul 2018 - 5 Jul 2018
There is famous organized hike over Jeseniky mountains called The sixty. The name refers to distance you have to hike, with good deal of elevation along the journey. In a bout of optimism Alice wanted to sign up and attend, but in the end we did not have anybody to take care of our kids. So we decided to try it out ourselves, a little more relaxed way over two days. It was pretty good, but we are still not sure we can make it in one day.

  15 Dec 2017 - 18 Dec 2017
To avoid awful time before Christmas, advertisment, shopping, full city and other related things we don't like, we fled to spend four days in snowy mountains of Jeseniky. Skiing, running, making snowman, walking winter landscape.
  20 Oct 2017 - 21 Oct 2017
We started a trip to Slovakia mountains, but due to various delays and bad weather conditions we eventually stayed on Czech-Slovak border mountains called Javorniky. In the small hamlet of Pulcin we found nice rocky formations and colorful fall forests.
  15 Sep 2017 - 17 Sep 2017
Nice fall-weather trip to Jeseniky mountains. It did not disappointed and we enjoyed a lot of fog, drizzle, random views, and water puddles.
  24 Aug 2017 - 25 Aug 2017
Final part of walk on Hardangervidda plain, slow descent within wonderful landscape to Eidfjord valley. We found a camp on the shore where we stayed one night. Finally we got a hot shower and nice fishy dinner. The next day we moved with a bus to Geilo, town known for its skiing area. Also it is one of train stops on the route from Bergen to Oslo.

Quick weekend before Christmas on empty ski slopes in Austria. Stuhleck is about three hours drive from Brno, so we decided to escape pre-Christmas craziness. Wonderful skiing was good reward.
  21 Oct 2016 - 24 Oct 2016
It is always perfect to return to our younger days when we travelled the Slovakia mountains. Area around Mala (Small) Fatra is one of my most favorite one. First day we paid the debt to really visit Sulovske skaly (Sulov Rocks). Our last attempt years ago ended because of heavy rain. This time weather still was not perfect, but drizzle stopped when we reached highest point of the rocks and offered great views to valley with stripes of vapor. Remaining two days we had wonderful weather in Mala Fatra, with colorful trees and snowy ridge at the top.
  15 Jul 2016 - 16 Jul 2016
A quick trip to highest Slovakia mountains, Vysoke Tatry. With my colleague Tomas we hiked to Bystre Sedlo (Sharp Saddle, 2300m) and the other day attempted Vychodna Vysoka (Eastern High, 2429m), but the did not get to the top due to bad weather. Nice and enjoyable trip.
  2 May 2016 - 5 May 2016
Last part of the trail ended in the town of Hongu Taisha, with large central shrine. All the journeys started here. Our steps continued along the Nakahechi trail, to the western coast of Kii peninsula. We met many nice people, enjoyed onsen in mountains, seen many shrines, and tasted great Japan cuisine.

Kumano Kodo Kohechi is an ancient pilgrim trail from Koyasan to the shrine or Hongu Taisha. It is about 70 kilometers long and usually takes about four days. Each leg ends in a saddle or valley - it is possible to arrange an accomodation or transportation, but it requires to speak Japan. We did two days of travel there and then had to move out to let Jana (Alice's sister) to return to Osaka. We continued further to Wataze Onsen for a camp with nice spa area.

As usual we spent couple days out just before Christmas, to avoid all the chaos. During that time it is great to skiing on empty slopes and enjoy deserted resorts. This time we picked Dolni Morava area, in the valley under Kralicky Sneznik mountain. There was quite a little snow, but it was really enjoyable time.

Few days spent in our favourite mountains, the Jeseniky in north of Czech. Last year we did good walk of about 9 kilometers, so we wanted to stretch this a bit more. In difficult weather (rain, fog) we managed to hike over 16 kilometers from Serak summit to our accomodation at Branna town. Remaining part was much easier, we did few strolls around Branna, swimming at pension pool, and visiting cake shop.

  20 Dec 2014 - 22 Dec 2014
In order to avoid christmas shopping hell and widespread tendency to spend the nice time of the year with cleaning the house, we left for mountains, despite apparent lack of snow there. First day was without snow - we went to a trip to nearby woods. In the evening, it started snowing, so the following day we could build a snowman, have many snowball fights and bobsleigh fun with kids. Last day all snow melted and it was nice sunny when we were leaving.
  17 Oct 2014 - 20 Oct 2014
Together with Alice we spent four days in highest mountains of Slovakia, High Tatras. Just one week before the area is closed for nature protection (which lasts till next year June), we found decent autumn weather with some snow on the tops and not so many people.
  26 Jul 2014 - 28 Jul 2014
It has been six years since we were in Slovakia mountains. Having three days available, we picked beautiful Western Tatras to test how fit we are. Even though we did not complete what we planned because of coming thunderstorm, it was wonderful trip.
  7 Jun 2014 - 9 Jun 2014
Since our boys are finally getting age when they are able to walk, we decided to try some mountains. Advertised for few weeks, Dan (age 5) was looking forward and Honza (age 3) tolerated the intent. There is nice area in Jeseniky mountains, so we went some 9 kilometers along the ridge. Turned out well, so next time we can try something more difficult with them.

  20 Dec 2013 - 22 Dec 2013
We typically use similar recipe for preparation of Christmas - to leave to some distant place in the mountains and do skiing and other winter joy. It is pretty easy to avoid preparation stress, also there is very little people in the mountains during that time. This year the weather did not promise anything good, but we still went and did not regret at all.

  18 Aug 2012 - 19 Aug 2012
Third trip - Alice found bunch of old quarries filled with water, so we can dip ourselves time from time. First day was supposed to be relaxing, other more demanding, but it turned out to be exactly the opposite. First day was very long and good elevation, while second day was pretty quick and easy.

  30 Jun 2012 - 1 Jul 2012
Second trip was finally two-day endeavour. We picked a cottage called Paprsek ("Light ray" in czech) in western part of the mountain range and then found some way we never went before. It was quite adventurous, because the path was off beaten track and it led through a cattle area. Fortunately we just heard the sounds, but even those were pretty scary.

One week that we spent in czech mountains. It came as surprise offer from our friends who had booked accomodation, but the other couple cancelled shortly before the trip. We accepted and never regret. It was rather easy to take care about three small kids and at the same time get some nice downhill skiing. We were also lucky for the weather. Alltogether wonderful time.

Four days spent on Highlands with Dan, our year-and-half old son. I made good solo trip on cross-country ski, we've seen ski jump area located south of Nove Mesto and made tons of sculptures out of the snow.

  11 Sep 2010 - 19 Aug 2012
Hard to belive, but during last three year we found ourselves only at three trips alone without Dan and Honza. Because we wanted at some mountains again, but still return soon enough to look after them, we picked Jeseniky mountains, which are just about 120km from Brno.
  11 Sep 2010
Trip over observation point Zlaty (Golden) Chlum. Relatively short trip to high point above Jeseniky town, but we managed to find gold mine information path, lost the trail for good part of the ascent, eat great food at cottage near Devil's rock area and return just in time to catch our train.

My brother initiated a trip to Jeseniky, the mountains we have quite close, about four hours via train. Original plan was changed to make our walk more ambitious, and it turned out to be very nice trip.
  2 Aug 2010 - 7 Aug 2010
Our vacation have changed since Dan was born. Basic constraints were two. The place should not be very far, because we cannot handle the cry for more than two hours. And good accomodation. Thus we have chosen Highlands, small mountains about 70 kilometers from Brno. Biking and walking around, however mostly from one sandbox to another, to keep Dan happy.

  24 Jan 2009
One day skiing in close Austria mountains. We chose probably best resort called Hochkar, placed near village Goestling an der Ybbs. It is a valley hemmed in high mountains, from which ski slopes go down. Features many types and difficulties, for those who wants something special there are also not maintained areas of deep snow.

  7 Nov 2008 - 9 Nov 2008
Beginning of ski season I spent on Austria mountains. Interesting event, many vendors come to this resort and offer borrowing their latest goods. You can try even models that you could otherwise not afford.

Cross country ski trip to the Jeseniky mountains. One attraction on the way there was waterfalls above the Nyznerov village. They are kinda small, but nice stop on our way. We haven't seen much snow for the ski until we reached the ridge, where for exchange the weather went a bit wild.

  15 Dec 2007 - 19 Dec 2007
Fortunate idea was, instead of "traditional" pre-christmas tidy up, to go into some mountain place and do skiing and other happy life things. There happen to be enough snow and three areas especially suitable for ski.

Weekend on Slovak mountains, this time it is Lower Tatras (Nizke Tatry). As planned we started on Friday, going to spend there as much time as possible. Saturday found us in camp near the mountains, weather was rainy and unpleasant. Me and Alice tried to reach Raztocka Hola, others rather spend some time in caves. The other day, Sunday, however showed nicer face and allowed us to ascend two highest hills here, Dumbier (2043m) and Chopok (2023m).
